MBA Hosts Second Educational Seminar
Featuring State Representative Pam Sawyer

On Thursday, June 18, 2009 the Marlborough Business Association held its 2nd seminar in the Association's Educational Series, featuring State Representative Pam Sawyer and Marlborough EDC Chairman, Greg Servodidio at It's So Ranunculus Flower Shoppe in Marlborough. The meeting was hosted by co-owners Craig Robinson and Leah Miner. The evening began with networking and refreshments, and an update on the ongoing activities of the MBA and its members. The second annual Marlborough Day is set for Sunday, August 23 from 11:00-4:00 at Blish Park. The MBA is looking for sponsors, volunteers and door prizes. The 16 month “Best of Marlborough” calendar is almost sold out of ads, and a coupon page has been added. Kevin Haggerty of Sadler's Ordinary announced the Farmer's Market taking place in the Village Shops at Marlborough beginning on June 21st and continuing on Sunday's until November.

State Representative Pam Sawyer was the featured guest speaker for the evening. Rep. Sawyer gave an update on the Legislative Session, and the bills that impacted small businesses. Not included in the budget proposals thus far, was what was going to help small businesses. For example, a positive that came out of the regular session, HB 5930 would require an impact analysis for any regulations that have an effect on businesses with 75 or fewer employees. She reminded the group that the Legislators would be heading back in for a Special Session to finalize a budget. Her biggest fear was that there was going to be a surcharge of between 20 to 30% on the corporation tax, putting a chill on the business climate in CT. Rep. Sawyer took questions from the group, and extended an invitation for business owners to contact their Legislators with any issues, concerns or questions they have.

Marlborough Economic Development Commission Chairman Greg Servodidio gave a brief update on plans for several Marlborough Town projects, including the sewers and sidewalks, as well as the old Marlborough Commons Plaza. He addressed several questions from the group, and invited all concerned to attend any meeting of the EDC. He also urged business owners to contact his office with any questions or concerns.
